Double-thick potholders

Double-thick potholders

Of all the potholders I’ve had in my life, these potholders are the best. Since using this one, I have never burned my fingers while cooking dinner. They are nice and thick yet supple and super easy to crochet.

Needed: 1 crochet hook 4.5 mm and cotton yarn suitable for crochet hook 2.5-3.5 mm. The potholders are crocheted with a double thread.

You start by measuring the length of your hand. This is important because the chain that you cast on should be slightly longer than the length of your hand. As a result, your potholder will fit nicely to the size of your hand.

Here we go:
With a double thread chain as much as you have a chain that is 3 to 4 cm longer than your hand + 2 extra turning chains.
1st row: 1 single crochet in the 2nd chain stitch from the hook. In every next chain you crochet 1 single crochet. In the last chain you crochet 2 single crochets. See the arrow in photo 2.

On all next rows you will stitch in the back loops. See the arrow in photo 6.

You will then see the front loops in a row next to each other. See the arrow in photo 7.

You will now work 1 single crochet in every single crochet. You don’t have to increase anywhere anymore.
When you have worked a number of rows, you will see that the ends will curl, that’s exactly the intention. See the arrow in photo 8.

Just crochet until you can fold the potholder so that the top edges touch. Cut the thread leaving a tail 4 times the length of the seam. Sew the seam. See photo 9.

Finally, single crochets around the potholder and crochet hanging loops. While crocheting, regularly lay the pot holder flat and check whether you are still crocheting straight ahead.

Happy crocheting and cooking pleasure, Catherine.
